Newtown Shots

William S. Burroughs said that "language is a virus from outer space," and Laurie Anderson sung it, but the evolution of meaning proves that the English language is alive. It's like a horror movie where the nasty thingy (technical term) continually morphs into some innocent looking object before it rips your brain apart.

Don't get me wrong, I mean where would comedians of the early nineties be if it wasn't for the good/bad substitution. In fact, I'm quite sure that a number of American sitcoms broke through the pilot barrier because fawning executives misunderstood what their bosses were saying.

Which comes to Flicks. A couple of obvious meanings, we thought, when we came up with the name of Newtown Flicks. And the one we liked was a perfect fit. Flicks equal movies. Don't know how it came about, but we love the word all the same.

What suprised me was Flicks has also come to mean "prints of photos of graffiti," and when we initially googled (another recent addition to the English language) Newtown Flicks, a graffiti website kept on coming up (which no longer exists).

Now, anybody that has had a wonder through the streets of Newtown, Sydney, may have noticed some walls are bit more colourful than others, while others display the wit of spray can jockeys. A lot of the work we've seen is a result of a Marrickville Council initiative and some of it has been done by visiting German artists at their own expense.

If your interested, have a look at some of the links below, but the easiest and best way is to take a walk through Newtown, check out a coffee shop or three and finish off with some shopping.
